What is Er Xian Tang?

Er Xian Tang, also known as Two Immortals Decoction, is a relatively newer Chinese herbal formula.

Developed during the 1960s by physicians in Zhejiang Province, China, Er Xian Tang consists of six herbs that work together to balance and nourish Kidney energy.

What are the benefits of Er Xian Tang?

Er Xian Tang may offer potential benefits for menopausal syndromes including hot flashes, mood swings, and fatigue.

TCM practitioners prescribe Er Xian Tang in individuals with a thready, rapid pulse and signs of Kidney yin deficiency, Kidney yin deficiency leading to fire, or Kidney yang deficiency. Symptoms may include headache, ammenorhea, sweating, irritability, insomnia, UTI, heart palpitations and hot flashes.

What is the dosage and method for taking Er Xian Tang?

The generally recommended dosage of Er Xian Tang in capsule form is four capsules, two to three times daily; or as loose granules, 4.5 g mixed with hot water, 2-3 times per day. However, always follow your healthcare provider's instructions, as the dosage can vary based on your condition and response to treatment.

Please see What's the Recommended Dosage for Granule Herbs? for more information.

When can I expect to see results?

Er Xian Tang typically starts to take effect within days. However, like all treatments, its efficacy can vary from person to person.

Does Er Xian Tang have any side effects?

While Er Xian Tang is generally considered safe for most people, it can cause side effects in some individuals. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or postpartum as well as people with liver disease, should avoid or use Er Xian Tang with caution.
