What is Tao Hong Si Wu Tang?

Tao Hong Si Wu Tang is a modification of the famous formula Si Wu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction).

The original Si Wu Tang consists of four herbal ingredients: Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Bai Shao), and Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong). Adding Carthami Flos (Hong Hua) and Persicae Semen (Tao Ren) into the original Si Wu Tang formula creates Tao Hong Si Wu Tang.

First mentioned in the classic TCM text "Prescriptions of the Bureau of Taiping People's Welfare Pharmacy,"  Tao Hong Si Wu Tang was likely developed during the Song dynasty (about 960-1127AD).

What are the benefits of Tao Hong Si Wu Tang?

This herbal blend is traditionally used in TCM to invigorate and harmonize blood, dispel blood stasis, and alleviate the pain.

Due to its ability to move blood, Tao Hong Si Wu Tang is often recommended by TCM practitioners to alleviate irregular menstruation, menstrual pain, as well as some postpartum disorders involving abdominal pain. Tao Hong Si Wu Tang is especially useful for pains that have a fixed location and are stabbing in nature, which is characterized by blood stasis.

What is the dosage and method for taking Tao Hong Si Wu Tang?

The generally recommended dosage of Tao Hong Si Wu Tang is 4.5 g mixed with hot water, 2-3 times per day. However, always follow your healthcare provider's instructions, as the dosage can vary based on your condition and response to treatment.

Please see What's the Recommended Dosage for Granule Herbs? for more information.

When can I expect to see results?

Tao Hong Si Wu Tang typically starts to take effect within days. However, like all treatments, its efficacy can vary from person to person.

Does Tao Hong Si Wu Tang have any side effects?

While Tao Hong Si Wu Tang is generally considered safe for most people, it can cause side effects in some individuals. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or postpartum as well as people with liver disease, should avoid or use Tao Hong Si Wu Tang with caution.

As with any Chinese herb, we recommend consulting with a qualified practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) about Tao Hong Si Wu Tang before any course of treatment is started.
