What is Si Jun Zi Tang?

Si Jun Zi Tang, also known as Four Gentlemen Decoction, is a classic Chinese herbal formula originating from the Han Dynasty.

This formula was initially recorded in the ancient medical text, "Treatise on Febrile Diseases," by Zhang Zhongjing.

What are the benefits of Si Jun Zi Tang?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Si Jun Zi Tang is used as an herbal formula to tonify spleen and stomach Qi, improve appetite, and alleviate symptoms of fatigue, diarrhea, and nausea.

Modern day uses of Si Jun Zi Tang include boosting the immune system, improving digestive health, addressing chronic fatigue syndrome, and enhancing recovery from illnesses or conditions that cause weakness and fatigue.

What is the dosage and method for taking Si Jun Zi Tang?

The generally recommended dosage of Si Jun Zi Tang in capsule form is four capsules, two to three times daily; or as loose granules, 4.5 g mixed with hot water, 2-3 times per day. However, always follow your healthcare provider's instructions, as the dosage can vary based on your condition and response to treatment.

Please see What's the Recommended Dosage for Granule Herbs? for more information.

When can I expect to see results?

Si Jun Zi Tang typically starts to take effect within days. However, like all treatments, its efficacy can vary from person to person.

Does Si Jun Zi Tang have any side effects?

While Si Jun Zi Tang is generally considered safe for most people, it can cause side effects in some individuals. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or postpartum as well as people with liver disease, should avoid or use Si Jun Zi Tang with caution.

As with any Chinese herb, we recommend consulting with a qualified practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) about Si Jun Zi Tang before any course of treatment is started.
