What is Xiao Yao Wan?

Xiao Yao Wan, known as “Free and Easy Wanderer,” is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula renowned for managing stress-related symptoms since the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Its blend of eight medicinal herbs work to harmonize the body's Qi, particularly addressing liver-spleen disharmony and mood imbalances.

What are the benefits of Xiao Yao Wan?

Xiao Yao Wan is widely known for its mood-regulating effects. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Xiao Yao Wan regulates Liver qi, strengthens the Spleen and tonifies blood. TCM practitioners often recommend Xiao Yao Wan for irritability, headache, fatigue, PMS and other conditions associated with Liver qi stagnation with blood and Spleen qi deficiency.

What is the dosage and method for taking Xiao Yao Wan?

The generally recommended dosage of Xiao Yao Wan in capsule form is four capsules, two to three times daily; or as loose granules, 4.5 g mixed with hot water, 2-3 times per day. However, always follow your healthcare provider's instructions, as the dosage can vary based on your condition and response to treatment.

Please see What's the Recommended Dosage for Granule Herbs? for more information.

When can I expect to see results?

Xiao Yao Wan typically starts to show effects within days. However, like all treatments, its efficacy can vary from person to person.

Does Xiao Yao Wan have any side effects?

While Xiao Yao Wan is generally considered safe for most people, it can cause side effects in some individuals. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or postpartum as well as people with liver disease, should avoid or use Xiao Yao Wan with caution.

As with any Chinese herb, we recommend consulting with a qualified practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) about Xiao Yao Wan before any course of treatment is started.
