What is Gui Zhi Tang?

Gui Zhi Tang, known as Cinnamon Twig Decoction, is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula known for balancing the immune system. It is a blend of five herbs: Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Bai Shao (White Peony Root) Sheng Jiang (Ginger), Gan Cao, (Licorice Root ) and Da Zao (Jujube Fruit).

Gui Zhi Tang was developed during the Han dynasty and first appeared in the Shang Han Lun medical text. Famous physician Zhang Zhongjing developed Gui Zhi Tang to treat ailments caused by external harmful influences. Physicians of the time also highlighted the formula as an effective remedy for Taiyang disease.

What are the benefits of Gui Zhi Tang?

In TCM, Gui Zhi Tang is known for harmonizing the body's nutritive (ying) and defensive (wei) systems.

TCM practitioners often prescribe Gui Zhi Tang for patterns of wind-cold with deficiency, such as chills and fever (with or without sweating), stiff neck, aversion to wind, headache, and nasal congestion with a soft, floating pulse.

What is the dosage and method for taking Gui Zhi Tang?

The generally recommended dosage of Gui Zhi Tang in capsule form is four capsules, two to three times daily; or as loose granules, 4.5 g mixed with hot water, 2-3 times per day. However, always follow your healthcare provider's instructions, as the dosage can vary based on your condition and response to treatment.

Please see What's the Recommended Dosage for Granule Herbs? for more information.

When can I expect to see results?

Gui Zhi Tang typically starts to take effect within days. However, like all treatments, its efficacy can vary from person to person.

Does Gui Zhi Tang have any side effects?

While Gui Zhi Tang is generally considered safe for most people, it can cause side effects in some individuals. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or postpartum as well as people with liver disease, should avoid or use Gui Zhi Tang with caution.

As with any Chinese herb, we recommend consulting with a qualified practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) about Gui Zhi Tang before any course of treatment is started.
